Upper Back & Shoulders

Studies indicate that upper back pain is very common among Americans, especially because most people hold their stress in this area. The thoracic spine is between the neck and low back.

There are 12 vertebra (T1 to T12) stacked vertically connected by ligaments with an intervertebral disc between them. A healthy disc is like a cushion and acts likes a shock absorber for the spine allowing for flexibility. There are also layers of muscles that support and provide movement to the upper and middle back.

Growing up, I had a fear of chiropractors… Since I’ve been going here, I feel a big difference in my neck, shoulders, and back.

What You Feel

  • Aching between the shoulder blades
  • Burning or tightness in the upper back
  • Limited shoulder mobility

What’s Happening

Misalignments in the thoracic spine cause muscle imbalance and nerve irritation. Poor posture amplifies these stresses.

How Divine Spine Helps

  • Digital imaging to pinpoint thoracic joint dysfunction
  • Computerized spine therapy to relieve pressure
  • Strength and posture correction training
  • Improved flexibility, posture, and comfort

“I could barely lift my arms when I started. Now, my shoulders move freely — no pain.”

The most common causes of upper back pain are:

Poor Posture

Hunching over a computer, slouching and using electronic devices puts extra pressure on your neck, upper back and shoulder region. This can cause a posture hump. Studies indicate that every inch your head moves forward doubles in weight. Improving your posture is crucial because chronically tense muscles can change the characteristics of your upper spine. A change you can make today is correcting your seated posture; proper seated posture involves maintaining a straight back and bringing your knees slightly higher than your hips.

Joint Dysfunction

This is commonly due to a thoracic subluxation. Which is when a joint in the thoracic spine is out of alignment or motion between the joint is restricted. This usually irritates the nerves and muscles and causes pain.

Degenerated Discs

A subluxation for prolonged period of time can lead to dehydration of the disc. This will cause the disc to shrink in size and the body will send calcium to fill in the gaps. This process is commonly known as degenerative disc disease or osteoarthritis.

Thoracic Disc Herniation

Although very rare a herniated disc may happen suddenly due to a traumatic injury or heavy lifting.

Give us a call if the pain has persisted over 3 or 4 days or if you have upper back pain, numbness or tingling traveling down your arms. It is important to have your spine evaluated as soon as possible to prevent permanent damage.

At Divine Spine, we utilize a computerized adjustment system that can gently restore motion and correct alignment without any twisting or popping of the spine. We have had tremendous success helping our patients with upper back and shoulder pain. If you have been suffering with persisting upper and mid back pain and are looking for a solution that does not involve drugs, surgery or twisting/popping then give us a call immediately.

What to Expect on your First Appointment

On your first visit, you will receive a comprehensive exam, if necessary, digital x-rays followed by a doctor’s report. We do this to figure out the root cause of your upper back issue and create a personalized treatment plan. Our goal is to go beyond relieving our patient’s symptoms, we strive to resolve the root cause of the problem and teach our patients the proper stretches and exercises to create lasting stability.
